If I try to parse my MCU fandom experience, it’s divided into two main sections: C/C (of which I’ve already posted about) and stony. There are small bits and pieces that exist outside these two (like fitzmack) but honestly, I haven’t paid them much attention. I don’t feel like I have to.
Anyhoo, stony! What isn’t there to love? And while I know my fandom experience is mostly based on the cinematic universe but what I absolutely LOVE is that there is SO MUCH CANON. Stony has existed for decades and there’s heaps and heaps of canon to choose from and pretty much whatever you come up with, it’s canon! Somewhere! Whether it’s a singular comic run or a side quest on the A:A game…it exists!
And I find it glorious.
I think that what endeared me to the MCU stony the most was the stellar casting. It’s been joked that Marvel Studios grew their actors on a farm because so many of them are exact, perfect fits for their roles. Tony Stark? RDJ is pretty much Tony! Chris Evans? Born to be the Cap. Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is absolute perfection and don’t even get me started on Tom Holland who pretty much spoiled his own future by saying he’d like to play spiderman at some point (and that his celebrity crush was Zendaya and look where he’s now…) Samuel Jackson and Clark Gregg are spot on Fury and Coulson, Paul Bettany's Vision is perfect, etc. The only miss, I think, was Terence Howard’s Rhodey in IM1 but that might have a lot to do with the fact that I just like Don Cheadle more.
Point being…after I got into stony, I very much turned into a Tony fangirl (and by proxy, a RDJ fangirl). I find it extremely easy to think about a story from Tony’s POV even when I’m writing someone else’s POV—his presence is so strong that it bleeds through. I love how tenacious he is, how his snark shines through anything, whether it’s sassing Pepper or talking back at Thanos. I love that he’s mostly out of armor in IM3 and, look. Tony Stark can take you out with kitchen appliances and he doesn't even need to program them with an AI. (IM3 is…somewhat a mess, mostly due to Pepper's attitude and I wish they’d shown MORE of Tony’s PTSD throughout the Infinity saga but alas.)
Don't get me wrong, I still like Cap. I adore that he's such a little shit and willing to just punch his way through. He has anger management issues and no respect for authority which makes it even more amusing when some people try to paint him as a poster boy. Because he's not: the dude lied his way to five different recruit offices and went against orders even before he was on the field. He's a hothead and a potty mouth and I find it absolutely hilarious whenever Steve is portrayed as a bashful “aww, shucks” -boy because, as someone somewhere said, he’s not a blushing 50’s Midwestern farm boy, he grew up in Brooklyn. In the 20’s. He went to art school. He damn well knows what gay is. 😀
A curious thing I realized when I was planning out these posts: the further along in the fandom (writing) experience I get, the more I write canon or canon divergence. (To clarify: if I’m writing in a canon setting and adding wings, omegaverse, soulmarks, or early forks on the road, I count them as canon divergence instead of AU.) Destiel was 23 AU to 4 canon/divergence, Clint/Coulson 9 AU to 27 canon/divergence, Teen Wolf 7 AU to 21 canon/divergence. I’ve only written one of my six Kingsman fics as AU. And stony? So far, two AU to 24 canon/divergence (and my upcoming stony RBB is a full AU). I’m not even sure why–I could argue that the MCU offers so much fantastical in itself that I don’t feel the need to go inventing anything of my own but… *shrug*
In addition to destiel, stony is another pretty equal ship I have. I tend to slightly lean into certain dynamics but that’s perhaps more of a mood thing than an actual preference. Top, bottom, switch, alpha, omega, experience or no experience, ace or super-horny…anything goes, really. Stony, like C/C, is one of those ships I enjoy writing, and coming back to it is like putting on a warm, comfortable cardigan. Cap/Iron-Man RBB seems to be the only fanwork event I keep returning to (mostly because it’s something I can offer to an artist without expecting anything in return) and the one I’m participating this year is my fourth. Each time has been a joy, and this year is no exception. (*cough* Our posting date is May 29th, just saying... *cough*)

And need we say more than "Chadwick Boseman"?

Date: Apr. 25th, 2023 17:29 (UTC)I have a love-exasperation relationship with Tony for this precise reason, I think. I love him in his own movies, but at some points it really felt as if him appearing in anyone else's movies but his own turned them into Avengers movies by the sheer force of his presence. Since he's not my #1 fave in the MCU... seemed a bit rude of him to come and steal everyone's thunder. :D
And yeah, the casting in the MCU truly was amazing.
